Gareon Conley falls into the Raiders’ lap

In an unexpected move, the Oakland Raiders stepped up at number 24 and selected Gareon Conley the cornerback from the Ohio State University.

Conley is widely considered the best cornerback prospect in this year’s draft and was slated for a top ten pick, though that was before being accused of rape on April 4. Conley has adamantly denied the claims of the accuser and consented to a lie detector test with the Ravens. He passed the test and was able to convince the Raiders of his innocence. Scheduled to meet with Cleveland police, where he will provide DNA evidence, it’s a risky pick that could possibly be another feather in the cap of Reggie McKenzie.

As a player Conley is a dream come true for the Raiders. At 6’0″ and weighing 195 pounds with 33″ arms Conley has the size to go with his 4.44 second 40 yard dash.

Conley is a smooth corner with excellent ball skills and the length to force quarterbacks to throw into even tighter windows. In the official Raiders press conference general manager Reggie McKenzie and head coach Jack Del Rio offered their thoughts on their new player.

We did our due diligence and we trust our research and reports on Mr. Conley. We’ve done miles and miles of research and it was a total board move. He was the best player available on our board. It’s hard to get separation from him. He’s big, strong, fast and understands the game. -Reggie McKenzie on Conley

I think he’s a highly skilled player and has the potential to be one of our better corners.

-Jack Del Rio on Conley

With the struggles this team has endured in defending the pass, a player possessing Conley’s undeniable skill set is a god-send to this football team. As with all new additions to the Raider family, it’s not official until you get the blessing of the franchise.
