Changes regarding celebrations after touchdowns will be made at the Owners’ Meeting
The NFL has gone out of its way in recent years to limit celebrations after player’s score touchdowns. Most of the times, a yellow flag has been thrown and a $12,000 fine imposed afterward, but that might change this week.
Peter King of the MMQB.com says that “It is asinine to use the “ball as a prop” [as a] reason to penalize players, and even more asinine to fine someone $12,000 for the simple act of expressing joy after scoring a touchdown. Most of those penalties will disappear Tuesday at the league meeting.”
It’s easy to agree with King because as often as they come, touchdowns are really difficult to score, so of course, players want to celebrate after scoring whether they may pretend they are rowing a boat or proposing to a cheerleader. Regardless, it’s only human to celebrate because of the thrill and excitement of the moment and commissioner Roger Goodell might have taken note of it.
Some people might get offended because Cam Newton “dabbed on folks”, but most want to see the human side of the sport. After all, as serious as some fans take football, at the end of the day it’s just pure entertainment and should be enjoyed by both players and fans alike.
I understand why Joe Buck would find it “disgusting” (I don’t) to see Randy Moss “mooning” after scoring a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers in a Wild Card game back in 2005, but most fans are happy to see that their favorite athletes aren’t robots and are having as much fun as they are.
Needless to say, it’ll be great to see the NFL loosen the penalties when players celebrate after a touchdown. We might be able to see a player “twerk” without the fear of being fined. Then again, because of the current fine system, the greatest quote when it comes to infractions was born: “Nothing to a Boss”
