Raiders add three players in preparation for Training Camp

Raiders add three players in preparation in recent roster moves

Earlier today, running back John Crockett, linebacker Brady Sheldon and offensive linemen Kareem Are, were signed by Raiders via the team’s official website. These appear to be summer “camp bodies” at worst and depth and special teams’ moves at best.

John Crockett had previously played for the Green Bay Packers where he was signed as an undrafted free-agent in 2015. He accounted for 9 rushes and 21 yards that season and spent last year on Reserve/Injury List.  Unless he plays special teams and even then, he will have a hard time making the team as the Raiders are loaded at the running back position with Marshawn Lynch projected to start and rookie Elijah Wood, Jalen Richards, and DeAndré Washington ready to come off the bench when called upon.

Kareen Are started his college career at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas before transferring to Florida State, where he redshirted as a true freshman in 2014. He ended up starting 22 games for the Seminoles and was even part of the All-ACC Third Team and the All-ACC Honorable Mention. Other than right tackle, all the starters on the offensive line are pretty much set. As it is, sophomore Vadal Alexander, free-agent addition Marshall Newhouse, and rookie David Sharpe are competing for backup roles. There are only so many rosters spots and the chances of Are making the team are slim.

Brady Sheldon, who tried out for the Raiders in their rookie-minicamp last May, was a star player for the Ferris State bullfrogs during his tenure there. This could be the most meaningful signing of the three as the linebacker position is in a state of flux and nobody has separated himself from the bunch yet.

Other than Sheldon and as pointed out previously, these are depth signing and nothing more; do not expect much out of what could end up being just “camp bodies.”
