Should Raiders Pursue WR Tyrell Williams?

It’s no secret the wide receiving corps for the Oakland Raiders is in need of serious improvement. A player who may fit the script to add such improvement you may ask? Enter, former Chargers wideout Tyrell Williams.

Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported earlier that the Raiders might be “likely” to make a run at Tyrell Williams this offseason. Although there have been recent rumblings about the Raiders and Antonio Brown, the fact is acquiring Brown could be more of a “dream scenario” for fans while picking up someone with Williams’ caliber is more plausible.

Williams is 27 years old which is certainly a positive but his declining numbers over the previous two seasons could be a red flag. In 2016 Williams set career highs with 1,059 total receiving yards on 69 catches with seven of those going for touchdowns. However, in 2017 his production dwindled down to 43 receptions for 748 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

The 2018 season didn’t do any favors for Williams either as his receptions dropped to 41 on the year and his yardage saw a dip as well with just 653 for the speedy receiver. Williams did, however, manage to score five touchdowns, so his production wasn’t entirely on the decline from the previous year, but is certainly not where one would expect.

A fresh start with the rival Silver and Black could be exactly what Williams needs. Even though we mentioned Williams’ decline, his 15.9 yards per catch in 2018 is higher than any Raiders receiver with 50 plus targets in a season since 2013.

Signing Williams could end up being a great option for Oakland as his signing price won’t break the bank or cost the team valuable draft capital to acquire his services.
