At 6’4″ and 329 pounds, Cody Ford is the definition of a big offensive lineman. Believe it or not, he even lost 15 pounds before the start of last season! He played both guard and tackle at Oklahoma and while he was a first team All-Big 12 selection at tackle last season, he will likely play guard in the NFL, possibly the Raiders.

Ford plays with a good wide base and that helps him in both run and pass blocking. His strong base is the perfect counter for physical defenders because it prevents him from getting pushed back. After contact, he keeps his feet moving, which also helps him maintain position against defenders. In pass protection, he is able to match the defender’s speed and moves fairly well for his size. Ford does lack a little bit of nastiness however. He often seemed content to stalemate defenders and didn’t show much ability to finish blocks. Most offensive line coaches will want him to play more physically and finish blocks with defenders on the ground.Â
While he showed some promise as a second level blocker, far too often he would overrun linebackers and miss the block. As a pass blocker, Ford has a tendency to turn his shoulders, which leaves him susceptible to inside counter moves from defensive linemen. The transition to guard should help him negate this issue. Ford showed that he can become a serviceable starter at the next level, but he needs finish more blocks before Pro Bowl and All Pro conversations start.
Fit for the Raiders
Ironically, guard Kelechi Osemele (6’5″ and 330 pounds) and Cody Ford are very similar in size and because of that, Ford might be capable of filling the void Osemele left. However, knowing there will likely be better players available at pick 27, Oakland can afford to hold off on Ford and see if he’s still on the board at pick 35.

The Rams could use some depth on the offensive line and Ford might be the best lineman available at pick 31. If they feel quarterback Jared Goff is their quarterback of the future, investing first round picks in the offensive line would be wise to keep Goff upright and healthy.Â
The Cardinals are another team looking to protect their young quarterback. Arizona gave up 52 sacks (tied for fifth most) and regardless of who their quarterback will be next season, that needs to change.Â
Also struggling in pass protection last season, the Packers could be looking to bolster their offensive line. Ford would add depth to Green Bay’s offensive line and could even push Billy Turner or Taylor Lane our if their starting role.
