Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is getting ready for the 2020 season in spite of not being able to work out with teammates and having to meet with the coaching staff on virtually. While doing so, he’s looking back at his past performances in order to become a better player.
With the noise getting louder and the rumor mill not stopping, Carr is set to be the starting quarterback in Week 1 of the 2020 NFL Season. Although he saw his numbers go up in both traditional and advanced statistics, he is aware he needs to improve if he and Raiders want to have a better record than last year’s 7-9.
In an interview with Vic Tafur of the Athletic, Carr discussed how he has been able to prepare and keep in touch with the Raiders through online meetings. Regarding the process, the quarterback says, “that’s been really fun. Honestly, once we are in the meeting and Coach gets going, we’re still moving like clockwork. The reaction time from what he’s asking to when we’re answering, you know, it’s not very … it’s not really delayed, it’s been actually really smooth.”

Carr later talked about how the coaching staff sets the tone for players workout, “during those meetings, the coaches are able to lay out a plan, throw things out there to us and say, “Hey, work on these things. This will work on this, this drill … or whatever. And then we can take that and work on it ourselves. Obviously, we have our trainers for our workouts and things like that. But when it comes to the football stuff, Coach has been on it. Plus, we have a good veteran room.”
To Carr’s credit, he’s looking at past mistakes in order to better himself, and talking about his bad plays, he said, “I’m at a point now where, you know, I can watch these games over and over again and say, oh, man, I missed that throw because of … A, B and C. Was it my footwork? Was it a protection call I could have made it more firm to where I didn’t have to move to the left and throw it? All those things. So I write those things down and list them in my mind. And then when I go hit the field and hit my fieldwork, I just drill them over and over again. So I don’t tell my receivers that I’m throwing with what I’m doing or anything like that, but I have a plan in my head when I hit the field every time.”
The Raiders got offensive weapons in the draft, but that in itself won’t boost their offense. They know Carr needs to be able to fully take advantage of the offseason additions. Based on the conversation with Tafur, the quarterback is aware and doing what he can in order to take the team back to the playoffs.
