Debate: Should Raiders Add Alternate All-Black Uniform

There’s a saying that goes, “If it ain’t broke…don’t fix it.” The Las Vegas Raiders undoubtedly have one of the most, if not the most iconic uniform in any sport, let alone football. Few teams can have a full embodiment of their organization simply by a color scheme. Nevertheless, the Raiders do – Silver & Black. Since the origins of the franchise, when they were called the Oakland Senores (prior to being dubbed the Raiders), the organization tinkered with the color scheme on a frequent basis.

In 1960, the team wore uniforms that featured the traditional black home and white away jersey color. Also, they also included gold outlines. Two years later, the team began to part ways from the gold on the uniforms as the away jersey no longer used the color even though the home uniforms did. The following season in 1963, the Raiders donned what is now more of the familiar look of the team.

Since then, there have been some changes, such as switching from silver numbers on the white jerseys to black numbers. Moreover, they used the color rush jersey, which closely resembles the away uniforms of the ’60s. Now that the Raiders are ushering in a new era entering Las Vegas, is it time to tinker with the uniforms again?

This isn’t a new debate either. In 2013, former Raiders running back Mike Goodson sparked interest over an Instagram post featuring an all-black helmet. In 2018, Rodger Carr, Derek Carr’s father, posted a photo on Instagram of a homemade all-black Raiders helmet as well.

Along with the helmet conversation, there have also been talks amongst fans that the Raiders should pair the all-black helmet with an all-black uniform to match. Mitchell Renz of ChatSports floated the idea of the whole uniform concept. It garnered so much attention that even running back Josh Jacobs got a hold of it.

In my personal opinion, I think this is a terrific idea for an alternate or a new color rush jersey. There’s no way I could see this as a new uniform for all home games. However, count me on the side of Josh Jacobs because these look amazing.

Currently, there is a rule in place by the NFL where teams can only wear one helmet per season. Nonetheless, Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians suggested the NFL may change direction. Raider Nation, you know the drill, let me know your thoughts in the comments or on Twitter!

The Raiders should have black jerseys with black and silver stripe going down the pan and a black helmet. And that should be there at home attire.
