Raiders QB Derek Carr Has Every Right To Feel Frustrated After 30-23 Loss

Although Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has flaws, he wasn’t the reason why the team lost in Week 4. After the game, he showed frustration and rightfully so. He did his part against the Buffalo Bills, but the Silver and Black couldn’t get the job done.

The Raiders have plenty of things to worry about but Carr isn’t one of them

Carr could certainly be more aggressive and take more shots downfield. Also, he needs to work on ball security. However, he doesn’t deserve blame for the Raiders’ loss against the Bills. He worked with what he had, Nelson Agholor and Zay Jones were his main targets. Although both are serviceable, they aren’t players opposing defensive coordinators spend the night game-planning for. Nevertheless, Carr made the most out of the situation.

Early in the game, Carr threw a 49-yard pass to Agholor. Had tight end Foster Moreau not been flagged for an illegal formation penalty, we would be talking about the quarterback’s ability to stretch the field. All in all, Carr played solid and finished the game with 32 completions for 311 yards and two touchdowns. He did it in spite of the Raiders’ not providing the best protection.

The quarterback played well but what about the rest of the team?

After the game, Carr said he was sick of losing. ‘He is sick of working as hard as he does, as hard as they do, and losing. It sucks.’ We’re speculating here, but could he have taken a shot at the team’s defense? After all, he ‘did his part’ but Paul Guenther’s unit failed to have an impact. They gave up almost 400 yards on defense and failed to produce any turnovers. Moreover, all they could muster was a sack.

The Raiders defense is giving up 30 points per game and the team currently has a -9 turnover differential, meaning that they have been outscored by nine points. Their offense definitely needs to score more points, but most of the blame must go to a unit that currently ranks 24th in points allowed.

Raiders brass needs to do something about their subpar defensive performance. Carr has every reason to feel the way he has and we doubt he is the only offensive player feeling that way. The team must do something about their lackluster defensive performance if they want to avoid losing their third straight game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

  1. Absolutely, and more than agreed. There are many and various problems. Derek Carr does not figure into them. The defense looks amateur almost across the board. Inconsistency seems to be their watch word. Yes, I’m aware there are some injuries. But the leadership, gap discipline, and hustle is nowhere to be found. I would say that the lackluster play is attributable to both coaching and players.

The players are not staying in their lanes. Do not keep inside containment, and are not tackling consistently. this is execution. There were several good plays made. I think Lawson stuck somebody hard after a gain of a half yard or so. After that, it is back to the same ol’. They look confused. The back end isn’t meshing with the front.

Are Marinelli and Guenther on the same page? Marinelli brought two good D lineman with him. One is injured. Nassib is not. We have three others that I’ve seen consistently produce. Where are they? Marinelli is supposed to be a premier D. Line coach. The Defense has to play complimentary football. The Offense cannot always be counted on to carry the day. We have to be able to cause turnovers and consistently tackle, know assignments, angles, eye discipline, make reads.

The offense did enough, even with the b.s. penalties and two fumbles. IF…IF the Defense would step up and contribute when they take the field. Personnel changes coaching changes scheme changes have to show something. It has to be quantifiable.

    1. Hey, Gabe. Thanks for reading. There are no simple fixes and many of them have to do with coaching. The defense doesn’t look better than it did last year even though they added plenty of talent. That has to do with coaching.
