Raiders Can’t Close Out Chiefs On Sunday Night Football and Lose 35-31

If you went into Sunday Night Football expecting a high scoring game, you weren’t disappointed. The Las Vegas Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs made sure to put as many points on the scoreboard as they could. However, the Silver and Black couldn’t sweep the Chiefs and dropped their fourth game of the season.

The Raiders set the pace in the first half

The Raiders wasted no time and scored in their first possession of the game. They drove 76 yards on six plays and running back Josh Jacobs capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown. The Chiefs wanted to join the party and answered back with a scoring drive of their own. Because scoring twice is better than once, the Silver and Black quickly struck back. Quarterback Derek Carr found wide receiver Nelson Agholor for a 17-yard touchdown.

Down 14-7 in the second quarter, the Chiefs put together a 73-yard drive that ended in a three-yard rushing touchdown by running back  Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Afterward, Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson nailed a 35-yard field goal to make the score 17-14.

In the first half, the Raiders only punted once and that was towards the end of the second quarter. In an effort to score before halftime, quarterback Patrick Mahomes targeted Demarcus Robinson, but cornerback Trayvon Mullen intercepted the pass.

Throughout the first half, Carr was very efficient and completed passes to seven different players. He went 13-of-16 for 183 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, both tight end Darren Waller and ‘Nelly’ went into halftime with four receptions each.

The Chiefs started the second half with purpose

The third quarter brought more of the same, as the scoring didn’t slow down. Down 17-14, Edwards Helaire scored his first touchdown of the game in the Chiefs’ first drive of the second half. However, the Raiders would return the favor and Carr would throw his second touchdown of the day, a three-yard completion to Waller to start the fourth quarter.

Down 21-24, Kansas City scored their third rushing touchdown of the night. This time though, it wasn’t Edwards-Helaire. Le’Veon Bell scored his first touchdown of the year and the Chiefs took a 28-24 lead. The Raiders marched back and Carr threw his third touchdown of the night, a one-yard completion to tight end Jason Witten.

Alas, the Chiefs, down 31-28, didn’t want to go into overtime and scored once again. The scoreboard was now 35-31 and in a last-ditch effort to win the game, Carr threw a long pass that ended in an interception. The Silver and Black lost 35-31 and dropped their fourth game of the season.
