Raiders running back Josh Jacobs

Raiders Run Game Has Bright Spots Despite Loss to Dolphins

The run game for the Las Vegas Raiders had some bright spots in an otherwise devastating loss that finally eliminated them from playoff contention.

This was a game overshadowed by highly questionable play-calling by head coach Jon Gruden. Conservative offensive game plans don’t work in the modern NFL. Nonetheless, the Raiders continued their trend of settling for field goals which has been a detriment all year. As far as the run game, there were some bright spots but overall it wasn’t enough.

Let’s take a look back at how the Silver and Black’s running backs did in this crucial matchup.

No Raiders running backs crossed the 100 yard mark…

The most noteworthy stat of the night was that neither rushing offense had a player go over 100 yards. Josh Jacobs amassed 69 yards off of 13 carries and averaged 5.3 yards per carry. The season is over as far as the postseason, but it’s important that ’28’ finish strong in 2020.

For as much criticism as Raiders quarterback Derek Carr gets, seeing him score on the ground is encouraging. In this contest, Carr was able to punch it in for a score, the only rushing touchdown of the night for Las Vegas. It was also refreshing to see Jalen Richard be part of the game plan. The crafty veteran broke off an 18 yard run in this contest.

Another highlight was seeing rookie Henry Ruggs III gain seven yards on the ground. Fans are hoping the Raiders coaching staff can find ways to get him involved next year and maximize his speed. As we look ahead to the final game of the year for the Raiders next weekend, getting Jacobs going should be the priority. The 2020 Pro Bowler will once again be an offensive focal point in 2021.
