What Will Raiders Do With Their Pending Free Agents?

The first domino has fallen, and no, we’re not talking about the scene in “Boyz N the Hood”, where Ice Cube is sitting in the front yard with his homies playing dominos, slams down a domino, and yells, “Domino [expletive]”. This is about the offseason roster cuts for the Las Vegas Raiders, beginning with Tyrell Williams. Wouldn’t that be brilliant though, Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock locked up in a casino suite smoking cigars, drinking whiskey with 1970’s rock music blaring playing the “domino roster cuts” game?”

What is the Raiders’ brass dealing with?

Mayock throws down the first domino with a jersey number and last name on it shouting Tyrell Williams. Gruden gives Mayock a dirty look because it’s a wide receiver. The Western Oregon product joined the Raiders in 2019 to be the big ‘X’ receiver in Gruden’s offense.

In 2019, Williams had 42 receptions for 651 yards and six touchdowns. However, he didn’t play in 2020 and joined the Injured Reserve list because of a torn labrum in his shoulder. Releasing Williams has freed up about $11 million in cap space with no dead money.

It’s Gruden’s turn, he looks at Mayock and throws down Lamarcus Joyner. A free agent from the Los Angeles Rams, Joyner signed a four-year $42 million contract with $21 million guaranteed. Cutting Joyner would open up $8.7 million in cap space with a dead cap hit of $2.5 million. The Raiders signed Joyner to play slot corner but struggled mightily at that position. This isn’t shocking though, as Joyner’s best years with the Rams were as a safety. This is just another example of Gruden and defensive coordinator Paul Guenther trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, out of position, and a horrible scheme.

  1. I would be surprised if Heath was cut. He was easily the best safety on the team last season, and is a very good special teams player. And his contract is pretty manageable. Won’t miss anyone else on that list, though it would have been great to have had Incognito back the way he was before the injury.
