The Las Vegas Raiders head into the 2021 NFL Draft with plenty of needs, some more pressing than others. While safety and right tackle may be at the top of their draft board, they can’t neglect the wide receiver position. For that reason, targeting Dyami Brown makes sense but should they take him in the first round?
Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus recently wrote about four prospects who could be surprising first-round selections and Brown’s name shows up. He believes that teams could reach for wide receivers like Brown, who can line up out wide or in the slot, in the first round.
The North Carolina native was a deep threat for the Tar Heels but he’s more than a one-trick pony. He is quick off the line of scrimmage and has shown an affinity for making double moves when running routes. Moreover, he hauled in 106 catches for 2,133 yards and averaged 20.1 yards per reception over the last two years. He needs to do a better job of holding onto the ball, as he dropped 15 passes the last two seasons. Nevertheless, he would upgrade a wide receiver corps in need of a playmaker.
Should the Raiders take Dyami Brown in the first round?
That should be a two-part question. The Raiders should definitely target Dyami Brown but not in the first round. Although some teams rank certain players higher, the 17th overall pick is too high for the wide receiver. He would be a better value in the second round, and if he’s available at that point, Las Vegas should consider pulling the trigger. On the other hand, they also need a safety and there could be some quality ones in the second round. The team’s brass would have to weigh in their options and decide which position they want to prioritize.
The Raiders need to take care of various needs in the draft. On the bright side, they have enough selections to take care of most of them. However, they can’t afford to “outsmart” other teams and take Brown in the first round. Especially when he will likely be available in the second round. If they play their cards right, they could come out of the player selection meeting with a nice haul.
