Raiders HC Jon Gruden Can’t Seem To Catch A Break From National Media

Since returning to the coaching sidelines, Las Vegas Raiders shot caller Jon Gruden can’t seem to catch a break from the national media.

First of all, let’s not make a martyr of Gruden, the man’s responsible for his own actions, right or wrong. When the team faced backlash for their actions in the middle of a pandemic, he took the heat. He’s the leader of this organization, so naturally, he’s going to take the bullet no matter what course he chooses. Whether it’s questionable draft selections, poor gameplay, and execution, or simply being careless with a facemask, Gruden receives the full wrath of the media. Perhaps, this comes with the territory of being the Raiders head coach with one of the largest coaching contracts. Recently, he’s been in the background, no longer on the forefront of everything publicly, and yet, he still can’t win.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk recently shed light on Gruden, and not in a good way. To be fair, Florio isn’t exactly a fan-favorite among the Raider Nation faithful. Quarterback Derek Carr certainly isn’t a fan, the signal-caller famously blocked the writer on Twitter. So naturally, many fans probably don’t care what Florio has to say. This is fair when you consider his history with the team. Be that as it may, he pointed out that that the head coach has been awfully quiet this offseason. Surely Raider Nation has noticed this as well, in fact, it seems that general manager Mike Mayock has been the team’s offseason ‘face’ this year.

Where do the Raiders stand in all this?

Perhaps, it’s a good thing that Gruden has remained in the background this offseason. Florio reminds everyone that the last time we all saw Gruden, he was trying to recruit a free agent on a live broadcast. Again, it was an error on his part but life goes on. Let’s not be naive and act like he didn’t do anything that organizations don’t do under the table.

The kicker in Florio’s report is his insinuation that Gruden is doing this as a ploy to set up Mayock as the proverbial ‘fall guy.’ According to the writer, by taking a public backseat, all of this year’s offseason moves will be pinned on Mayock if the team falters once again. That’s certainly something to think about no doubt. This is all speculation on Florio’s part, none of us know what Gruden has planned nor why he’s in the shadows at the moment. For now, the organization is focused on its offseason activities which began this weekend.

  1. I think as Raider fans, we realize that syndicated journalists are Raider haters. I’m hoping that looking back on the last two years, Gruden realizes he can’t be an absentee head coach. The defense took all the heat, but there were three games his play calling and poor offensive execution lost the game – Kansas City home game, LAC home game and the Miami home game. I think the coaches on the hot seat are Cable and Bradley. Gruden
has too, has too let these coaches know the time is now!

  2. Florio is a hack! I don’t know how he still has a job in sports media! He should be mopping bathrooms in a high school somewhere!

  3. Mario…..why have you even given Florio’s ridiculous assertion any space whatsoever? By all appearances, Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock have a homogenous working relationship. Florio is a Gruden hater who wishes he could ascend to the pinnacle of media notoriety, as has Gruden. His jealousy for what Jon Gruden has accomplished, on and off the foorball field, is only rivaled by his vain stupidity. I understand that Covid restrictions have limited sportswriters’ access to pertinent team information. But there has to be some other peripheral story you could cover. Instead you dedicate space to gratify whatever nonsense an idiot like Mike Florio choses to spread around. Really ?

    1. All fair points, but still, I have to do my due diligence. Thanks for weighing in.

  4. You believe anything Florio says? You do know anything he says is just trolling right? All i know is that he is always just saying stuff, anything, and if it stick he’s running with it.

  5. Im a jets fan, the raiders are one of only a couple other teams i dont hate. I think the jets and raiders are bar none the 2 most criticized teams in the media. And sure, sometimes its for a good reason, most of the time its just clickbait though. They know both fanbases are savages and will pounce on garbage articles and it gets them clicks. You dont see jaxonville in the media because they have no fans, nobody cares. When we thought jets had the #1 pick one of these national jagoffs said trev lawrence should refuse to play for the jets. Never said that about jags though, because it wouldnt get clicks. These national pricks dont do their research n really know much less on any day than the fans reading this. Look at this shefter sheister. Admits he totally made up the aaron rodgers story on draft day with no remorse and nothing. Shows their mostly all a bunch of unethical click hungry scavengers. So eff them, Raider Nation!
