With the recent news that the Las Vegas Raiders may be working on an extension for Derek Carr, there’s a chance they are out of the QB market entirely. However, if the 2021 season does not go as planned, it may be time for a change. If so, here are a few preliminary names to watch.
Sam Howell
If the wheels were to totally fall off for the Raiders this season, they would likely be in a position to take Sam Howell. Currently projected as a top ten pick, Howell often receives comparisons to Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Due to their similar build and competitive nature, this is a fair comparison to make. However, Howell certainly has work to do in his Junior season to reach the level of Mayfield. Providing consistent accuracy will be paramount for the young passer in 2021. With added polish to his game, Howell could very well contend for the number one overall pick.

Spencer Rattler
The former top prospect as a high schooler, Rattler has become a star at the college level as well. Despite a rough start in 2020, he was able to display all the natural abilities he was praised for. Simply, he has special arm talent. With the ability to make any throw on the field, he constantly puts fear into defenses. While he may be a little immature right now, he has all the tools to follow in the footsteps of other highly drafted Oklahoma quarterbacks.

Bo Nix
Currently, Bo Nix is not a very good quarterback. However, several times a game you are able to see glimpses of uncanny natural ability. For the Raiders, this is a selection that could be available to them much later in the draft. With some development in the 2021 season, however, don’t count out the NFL falling in love with the big, strong-armed passer from the SEC.

A fun process ahead for the Raiders
While we still have a ways to go in the 2021 scouting process, it promises to be a memorable one. The quarterbacks are everywhere including others such as Desmond Ridder, Malik Willis, and Kedon Slovis as well. Of course, the Raiders are likely to stay the course with Derek Carr for the next several years. Alas, if they decide to switch gears in 2022, these young signal-callers could be wearing Silver and Black.
