DeMarvin Leal is the nightmare defensive tackle opposing offense’s dread.

When it comes to football’s linemen, the athleticism of those that fight in the trenches grows each season at every level. But Texas A&M’s DeMarvin Leal presents a scarce skill set as a defensive tackle.

As a freshman in 2019, DeMarvin started seven games, accumulated 5.5 tackles for loss, and generated two sacks. As a result of his potential, last season, he took off as a full-time starter. The Aggie led his unit in both tackles for loss and QB hurries. Leal wreaks his havoc by lining up at many positions along the defensive front to maximize his talents. As someone who weighs 290 pounds and stands 6’3″ tall, the Aggies maximized his abilities each week.

What are DeMarvin Leal’s strengths?

One of the most exciting aspects of Leal’s game is his power. As one of the nation’s top bull rushers, he centralizes many of his moves based upon his strength. However, what makes him more threatening is his fluidity and explosiveness.

This allows Texas A&M to place him at any position along the defensive front.  The sack numbers may not be there, but his impact in games is tangible. Despite being one of the unique players in the 22′ NFL draft, there are some weaknesses.

How can Leal solidify himself as a top 15 pick in the 22′ NFL draft?

There is always room for improvement, no matter who the prospect is. However, for Leal, there aren’t many areas that he needs to improve on. One thing that may hold him back in the eyes of some is that he does not possess a true position. He is a defensive tackle by nature with great strength and block shedding ability; however, some teams would say he is not a ‘schematic’ fit. Again, that is not his fault; but he can control (somewhat) his sack production as a pass rusher. If Leal can amass a double-digit sack total this season, it could catapult him to potentially being a top-five pick. His versatility and unique athleticism are too great for him not to meet (or come close to) that mark.
