The Oakland Raiders have signed former Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Oday Aboushi. Offensive line coach Tom Cable and Aboushi will be reunited after the two spent 2017 in Seattle together.
The signing of the Aboushi will add significant depth to the Raiders offensive line. And it comes at a needed time as Donald Penn has reportedly started camp on the PUP list. Here are five things to know about the newest addition to the Silver and Black.
- College Days
Before joining the NFL ranks, Oday Aboushi played college football for the University of Virginia from 2009-2012 where he had great success. Aboushi played in 43 games as a Cavalier 37 of which came as a starter. After a stellar junior season where he started every game at left tackle, Aboushi was voted Second-Team All-ACC in 2011. Aboushi would build off this and make the jump to First-Team All-ACC during his senior season in 2012.

Aside from going toe-to-toe with some of the NFL’s best defensive linemen, Aboushi has done wonderful things to help those in need. In 2014, Aboushi along with the Islamic Medical Association of North America traveled to Sudan and together they helped to repair 185 cleft lips. Also with Oday was his sister Tahanie and brother Haytham and they assisted doctors by giving patients IV’s.
- 2013 NFL Draft
Aboushi entered the 2013 draft as an offensive tackle where he had success as mentioned above, but once in the NFL, he would get moved to the interior of the O-line. Despite his back-to-back All-ACC honors in his junior and senior seasons, Aboushi would slide to the fifth round where the New York Jets selected him at pick No. 141.

During his first preseason with the Jets as a rookie, Aboushi appeared in all 4 exhibition games but would not see the gridiron during the regular season.
Aboushi’s second season, however, would be different as he played in 15 games and made 10 starts for the Jets. One day after getting reinstated for a suspension of violating the league’s substance abuse policy, Oday was released by the Jets and later picked up by the Houston Texans. In two seasons in Houston Aboushi appeared in 11 games, eight of which were starts. After his two-year stint as a Texan, Aboushi joined the Seahawks in 2017 where he started in all eight games he played in, but his season ended on IR after a shoulder injury. Now Aboushi has reconnected with O-line coach Tom Cable where the 315-pound lineman will look to latch on and make the 53-man roster.

Being able to play at different positions is nothing new for Aboushi. In high school, Aboushi was a standout defensive lineman as well as being a star on the offensive line. In college, he would play both the tackle positions on the O-line as well as being used on the interior. Now on his fourth team since 2013, this NFL journeyman will look to make a home in Oakland wherever he fits in.
