Amid More Cap Space Raiders In Prime Position

Once thought to have been done with NFL free agency, the Las Vegas Raiders all of a sudden can add another piece, or two, to the team thanks to clever maneuvering.

Raiders brass, including general manager Mike Mayock, were able to give themselves some cap flexibility earlier this week and made it possible for them to make another signing.

As of right now, the Raiders have about $10.36 million in cap space per Spotrac. How did this happen?

Raiders Blog: Making Moves…

It was a series of moves and transactions that have led the Raiders to being in this great in position. First, the Eli Apple signing fell thru. Then, the team restructured center Rodney Hudson’s contract by converting $11.6 million of his base salary into a signing bonus.

The next domino to fall was the signing of free agent Damarious Randall, projected to be a starter alongside last year’s first round pick, Johnathan Abram. Ian Rapoport reported that the deal for Randall is worth about $3.25 million for one year.

Now What?

The Raiders are in control of their destiny depending on what they want to do. Having cap space doesn’t mean they should sign someone for the sake of it. Do they need another corner? Of course. Even if Trayvon Mullen is a starter, they still need one opposite of him. As far as free agents, there’s Logan Ryan, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Darqueze Dennard. Solid options but then again, why not let Mayock do what he does best and perhaps, look for a starter in the draft.

No one needs to remind Mayock and head coach Jon Gruden of what they need, so let’s see what they do with this flexibility and the excellent position it puts them in.
