What about Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther?
Now, for the aforementioned Paul Guenther. His defense with the Raiders has not been great, but he has not had the greatest cast either. He joined the Raiders in 2018, and didn’t have the luxury of working with Khalil Mack as they had traded him before the season started.
Yet, his defenses have never been inside the top 10 in total yards given up. They were once in the top 15 only, coming in at 11 in 2015. In his first season with the Raiders, their defense was dead last in total sacks. It improved much this past year with 32, but that seemed more because of defensive line coach Brentson Buckner’s influence over the unit and the good rapport he developed with them.
The Raiders defense have had bad days, there’s no doubts about that. Carr and the offense has also come back from behind, but what about the three-and-outs or bad offensive play that lead to exhaustion from the defense being out on the field a lot.
Against Guenther is the fact his defenses have not been disciplined over the years. Just go back to those games between the Bengals and Steelers and watch linebacker Vontaze Burfict and cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones implode. How much of it is on Guenther, and how much the team we can point to the talent or lack thereof? Regardless, Guenther has been at this for awhile and the numbers don’t lie.
One stat he did have in his favor is points given up. Back with the Bengals he allowed the 12th, second, eight, and 16th most points in his tenure. With the Raiders he’s been 32nd and 24th. He hasn’t had the greatest talent, but he now has two very solid linebackers.
The Silver and Black added plenty of young players in the secondary this offseason. Moreover, the defensive line has potential and depth. Guenther has the talent and has to show results. Meanwhile, Marinelli awaiting to move in Guenther’s office.
