3 Defensive Raiders Players With The Most To Prove in 2020

The Las Vegas Raiders as a whole have something to prove after a 7-9 campaign in 2019. Let’s take a look at three defensive players who have the most to prove in this upcoming NFL season.

With NFL training camp underway, the Vegas Raiders are looking forward to making a mark in 2020. It goes without saying several players want to help get this team to the next level. Perhaps it’s more crucial than ever entering Jon Gruden’s third year at the helm. Across the board on defense, there will have to be several contributors with something to prove. The much-maligned defensive unit for the Raiders has been a weakness since Gruden’s arrival with Paul Guenther as the defensive shot-caller.

With that said, who are three defensive players that will have the most to prove this upcoming season?

The Raiders had some bright spots on defense last year, among them was cornerback Trayvon Mullen. Why would he need to prove anything? Well, as a rookie he turned out to be a revelation on defense, but he’ll need to show he can sustain that success. Is it possible he was that good because he was on a defense that was that bad?

Statistically, Mullen was solid, allowing a 55.9 completion percentage after being targeted 68 times by opposing quarterbacks. On top of handling pass coverage well, Mullen had a 77.9 grade in rushing defense per Pro Football Focus.

While Mullen persevered and fought his way to becoming the starting corner, this offseason the defensive backfield is loaded with talent. In particular, Mullen will have to fend off a pair of rookies from taking away snaps. He might already be penciled in as a starter, but Mullen’s job is by no means safe.
