Is Darren Waller the Raiders franchise tight end or was 2019 a fluke?
How does Carr’s favorite target in 2019 end up here? It’s simple, Waller has to show he can build on last year’s success. Believe it or not, that may be hard to replicate when you factor a couple of things.
First off, the Raiders offense will now feature an arsenal of new weapons and running back Josh Jacobs will command his share of carries as well. Carr went to Waller for his reliability last year but also because the offense was devoid of receiving talent. We can expect Waller’s targets to go down, not to mention the Raiders will have a healthy Foster Moreau and a future Hall of Famer in Jason Witten.
Waller came on strong after a Week 3 performance in which he caught 13 passes and totaled 134 yards. Unfortunately, after Week 8, Waller never saw the red zone again. In fact, with defenses zeroing in on him, Waller never repeated his double-digit catch performance, only coming close one in Week 15 with eight. In a year with so many expectations and optimism, Waller will have to prove he’s not a one year wonder.
