Should Raiders Trade For Cowboys DE Everson Griffen?

Six weeks into the 2020 NFL season, it’s fair to say the Las Vegas Raiders defensive line has underperformed. So far, the group has registered six sacks and has had a hard time pressuring opposing quarterbacks. Although some of their struggles fall on the coaching staff, an infusion of talent could give them a boost. Maybe they should consider trading for Dallas Cowboys defensive end Everson Griffen if they haven’t already.

What does Everson Griffen bring to the table?

Originally a fourth-round draft pick for the Minnesota Vikings in the 2010 NFL, Griffen signed with ‘Big D’ this past offseason. In seven games, he has registered 20 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. Although he has been solid, things have taken an unexpected turn. Heading into Week 8, the team is making it known that the defensive end is available via trade according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Regardless of the reason why the Cowboys want to part ways with him, Griffen is a solid pass rusher. During his ten-year tenure in Minneapolis, the USC product registered 74.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles, 350 total tackles, and even two interceptions. If that wasn’t enough, he has four Pro Bowl designations under his belt.

Could Everson Griffen help the Raiders?

The Raiders defense has been subpar this season and there doesn’t seem to be a quick fix to their woes. At this point, they need to try everything they can in order to shake things up. While they need to look for ways to get more out of their scheme, they could also try to add Griffen.

Since the Coybows are the ones offering him, their price should not be steep. A fourth or fifth-round pick seems like a fair price. Also, the Raiders have displayed an unwillingness to part ways with draft selections so if they are really interested in Griffen, they should pull the trigger.

Also, the Raiders don’t have the best track record when it comes to draft picks so it makes sense for them to acquire established talent. As good as their offense is, they can’t let their defense become a liability, that’s why it makes sense to throw darts and see what sticks. Trading for Griffen could be a move that helps them get over the hump and doesn’t entail many risks.
