Raiders Should Pursue LB Vic Beasley After Inactivity On Trade Day

The NFL’s trade deadline came and went and the Las Vegas Raiders opted not to do anything. Even though the team would benefit from an infusion of talent on defense, they decided to stay put. The Silver and Black can no longer add players via trade. However, they can still sign free agents without restrictions, and if they choose so. If that ends up being the case, they should kick the tires on outside linebacker Vic Beasley.

What does Vic Beasley bring to the table?

Before the November 3 deadline, the Tennessee Titans tried to trade Beasley to no avail. Now that they can no longer trade him, they have announced that they would be releasing him. If teams didn’t make a move for Beasley, it was because they didn’t part ways with any resources, not because the linebacker can’t play.

Now as a free agent, Beasley will surely command interest from different teams. After all, he has amassed at least five sacks in four of his six NFL seasons. He hasn’t registered a quarterback takedown with the Titans, but that could be due to not being a fit. Regardless, the Raiders should perform due diligence.

Why the Raiders should perform their due diligence

Before holding the Cleveland Browns to six points in Week 8, the Raiders gave up at least 30 points per game and their defense ranked 31st in points allowed. It’s too early to tell whether their game against the Browns was an anomaly or a trend, but even after not allowing a touchdown, they rank dead last in touchdowns allowed heading into Week 9.

Also, the Silver and Black received help from the elements against the Browns. That made it very difficult for them and the Browns to score, so it’s not as if they suddenly became a defensive powerhouse. If anything, they shouldn’t get too confident and should look for ways to improve. Kicking the tires on Beasley would be a good start.
