Marvin Jones Jr. Could Be The Veteran WR Raiders Need

If the Las Vegas Raiders end up looking for a veteran wide receiver this offseason, Marvin Jones Jr. could be the one that answers the call.

The Detroit Lions acquired quarterback Jared Goff this offseason, so maybe retaining Jones will be a priority. However, if the soon-to-be free agent isn’t re-signed, the Raiders should look into his services. Assuming that Nelson Agholor doesn’t return to the Silver and Black, the team will find itself with a void at wide receiver.

Considering the chemistry ‘Nelly’ and quarterback Derek Carr developed, retaining the wide receiver should a top priority. Nevertheless, if Agholor’s gone, Jones could instantly become the team’s number two or three receiving option. Rolling with Henry Ruggs III, Bryan Edwards, and Hunter Renfrow as your wide receivers alone could be risky. Edwards needs to prove he can stay healthy and the Raiders didn’t know how to deploy Ruggs effectively last year. Meanwhile, Jones had his best season since 2017, starting all 16 regular-season games for Detroit.

What can Jones bring to the Raiders?

Even though Jones will be 31 after March, his production has been solid since 2017, hauling in 76 receptions last year. He’s accumulated 23 touchdowns in that three-year span and has averaged 12.6 yards per reception or better during that time. The six-foot-two, 200-pound wide receiver has the skillset to man the slot or play the Z on the outside. Just look at how Jones obliterated cornerback Jaylon Johnson last year.

We all know Jon Gruden loves his veteran wide receivers and who can blame him. Jones is a proven commodity that brings reliability with established productivity. There’s no reason to think that Jones can’t be a 1,000-yard receiver in Las Vegas. For the right price, Jones would be an excellent addition.
