Raiders FA: WR Marvin Jones Chooses Jaguars Over Silver And Black

The Las Vegas Raiders are having a rough stretch after a productive first day of the legal tampering period. Free-agent Marvin Jones bypasses Las Vegas and heads to Jacksonville instead.

The Silver and Black made an impression when they landed edge rusher Yannick Nagkoue recently. It seemed the team was prepping to address their deficiencies but now things have taken a turn. Wide receiver Nelson Agholor opted to join Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots. Losing out on one of their top offensive weapons doesn’t bode well for 2021. On top of that, another receiving option in Marvin Jones is off the market as decided to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It’s still early in free agency but there isn’t much in ‘elite’ talent this year at wide receiver as far as free agency. Surely the Raiders wouldn’t overpay for someone like JuJu Smith-Schuster or A.J. Green, right? Wide receiver didn’t appear to be a priority this offseason after such a dismal defensive performance in 2020. Nevertheless, simply ignoring the unit might not be the smartest thing either.

The Raiders have bigger fish to fry…

In the wake of the news that set social media ablaze, the outright release of center Rodney Hudson overshadowed Jones’ signing. The former Detroit Lion agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $14.5 million with $9.2 million guaranteed with upstart Jaguars for two years, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jones joins a squad now led by college football legend Urban Meyer and will likely feature quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Considering the playmaking ability that was lost in Agholor, Jones would’ve been a solid replacement, in the end, it was not to be. Las Vegas should turn its attention to next month’s NFL draft and possibly target a prospect such as D’Wayne Eskridge. Regardless, we’ll continue to monitor the situation during this free agency period for Raider Nation.
