Michigan’s Jalen Mayfield will provide a long-term solution for the Las Vegas Raiders at right tackle if he’s available in the second or third round.
Finding a right tackle in the draft should be on top of the team’s priority list. Not to drag Brandon Parker’s name through the mud but many will be rightfully concerned if he’s the starter this year. While many disregard Pro Football Focus grades for offensive linemen, they do paint a concerning picture. Parker posted a 55.3 pass-blocking grade in 2020, allowing one sack in 345 snaps. The point is that the Raiders need to find someone to fill Trent Brown’s shoes for the next decade; Mayfield could be that answer.

What should the Raiders look for in Mayfield?
Standing at six-foot-five and weighing in at 319 pounds, Mayfield figures to eventually be a starting tackle on either side and could even turn out to be a good guard. This type of upside and versatility should not be taken lightly, especially if he’s available in the third round. Some might be concerned with his overall lack of playing time but when he did play, it was impressive. Per PFF, his 2020 grades were a solid 72.3 in run blocking and 75.5 in pass protection. His best showcase came during the 2019 season, where he played 851 snaps for the Wolverines. He surrendered just one sack and 23 hurries in that stretch.
While he certainly will need polishing in his game, the potential is there with the right coaching. Also, he has the raw strength and power that will translate to the NFL. A noteworthy combination of strength, movement, and quickness, Mayfield has the foundation physically but under Tom Cable, he’ll become a more capable pass blocker. If Mayfield’s there when the Raiders have their two third-round picks ready, he’d certainly warrant consideration. Perhaps he could even be worthy of the team’s second-round selection as well.
