In 2020, Trayvon Mullen was perhaps the Las Vegas Raiders’ best defensive back. However, even he would tell you he has room to improve.
A season of progression for the Raiders cornerback
After a rookie season that saw Mullen take some lumps, he took many positive steps in 2020. Not only did the former second-round pick start all sixteen games, but he also showed more playmaking ability toward the end of the season. With two interceptions in 2020, Mullen would certainly like to be around the ball more. Regardless, the Clemson product was certainly the Raiders’ best cornerback last year. Heading into 2021 however, Mullen will experience a change in scheme that will certainly affect his season.
This year, Gus Bradley represents a schematic shift from Paul Guenther. The new defensive coordinator represents a heavy dose of Cover 3 while Guenther often deployed Cover 2. For Mullen, this represents almost an entirely new playing style.
He’s not worried, however, as Mullen recently said in a presser that ‘Being consistent is the biggest thing I work on… the more you’re consistent, the more things will just happen for you. Just gotta go out there, play fast, and know your job.‘ The Raiders’ defense certainly could use any sort of positive consistency, especially from their defensive backs.
Ready to take the next step
The biggest thing that always shines through about Mullen is his confidence. Whether it is at a press conference or on the field, he always does so with great energy. As such, it is easy to see him improving in 2021. Although he is learning a new scheme, look for him to improve again in Year 3. If he can continue to take steps forward, he’ll become the best cornerback the Raiders have had in a long time.
