The Las Vegas Raiders family and Raider Nation have lost legendary coach John Madden.
The Raiders have lost one of their most iconic and important members. The 85-year-old Madden died unexpectedly earlier today. The organization released a statement following his passing, citing his importance on and off the field, not just for the Raiders, but for the sport of football in its entirety.
“Few individuals meant as much to the growth and popularity of professional football as Coach Madden, whose impact on the game both on and off the field was immeasurable.”
His accomplishments as head coach of the Raiders are well-known. He led the Silver and Black to their first Super Bowl win back in 1977. In his ten seasons as head coach, Madden accumulated a record that was highlighted by 103 wins and only 32 losses. His winning percentage of .759 has also stood the test of time; it still ranks among the highest for a coach that has seen the field for more than 100 games.
More than just a coach, Madden was a true ambassador for football. Yes, his last name is synonymous with the video game franchise that bears his name. However, he helped the NFL reach a global audience, not to mention his announcing and his ability to break down plays for the average fan is the stuff of legends. Needless to say, the man will be missed by both fans and, of course, his family.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Madden family. Rest in peace, coach.
RIP to the greatest coach in Raiders history, John Madden.
