Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell, Hunter Renfrow praises rookie.

“If He Goes In There, We’ll follow.” Hunter Renfrow On Raiders Rookie Aidan O’Connell

While many dismiss training camp stories as simple “feel-good” nonsense, one can’t help but pay attention to what’s being said. Sure, passes thrown during camp don’t hold much weight for a lot of fans, but anyone with an understanding of the game knows that this is a major factor heading into the season. The fact that Raiders rookie Aidan O’Connell is receiving rave reviews is something worth noting. More so when you consider the source—Pro Bowl wide receiver Hunter Renfrow.

Hunter Renfrow is vouching for Aidan O’Connell already…

No player wants to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season more than Renfrow. The crafty vet knows that last year’s debacle wasn’t his best showing. If his health has returned, there’s an argument to be made that he’s still the No. 2 guy behind Davante Adams. However, Jakobi Meyers’ addition to the Raiders is surely only pushing No. 13 to be a better version of himself. With Derek Carr gone, the new trio of quarterbacks, which includes O’Connell, has been the talk of the town in Henderson. Despite being a rookie, his passes in camp have made waves on social media.

More than just making the throws, O’Connell will have to display leadership, pocket presence, and accuracy if he expects to be in line for playing time.

As far as Renfrow’s concerned, he’s already checking off some of those boxes. He confirmed as much addressing the media this past weekend.

“…He’s just been a guy who’s stepped up in the huddle and just has that calm demeanor about him. Guys want to follow him. He’s been incredibly accurate since he’s gotten here. I don’t know how all this plays out, but he’s someone who we believe in. If he goes in there, then we’ll follow.”

Considering O’Connell is a rookie, it’s encouraging to hear key players such as Renfrow point things like this out. The fact that No. 4 (yes, him) is showing he’d be capable of leading an offense with so many veterans and, more importantly, said veterans “would follow,” speaks volumes.

While most Raiders fans expect Jimmy Garoppolo to handle starting duties barring an injury, maybe the future is indeed bright. Yes, it’s just camp, but O’Connell is making the most of it.
