The first round of this year’s NFL draft could be a pivotal one for new Las Vegas Raiders general manager Tom Telesco. If it comes down to Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold or Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., who does he put his chips on?
Both positions for the Raiders could use reinforcements; with Amik Robertson gone, Patrick Graham could certainly use someone to fill his shoes. On the other hand, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Raiders fan who doesn’t want a new quarterback. As of today, the team will be relying on Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew—not exactly the flashiest or “sexiest” position group.
Who’s It Going To Be, Tom: Terrion Arnold or Michael Penix?
A plausible scenario for the Raiders come draft day might be choosing between Terrion Arnold at 13 or potentially “reaching” by going with Michael Penix…

As far as Penix goes, our own Alex Monfreda recently made a strong case for the Huskie to be the next Raiders quarterback. At the same time, some feel that he’s not worthy of first-round hype, so to speak. In other words, what if he can be had in the second round? Conversely, if the Raiders stay at 13 and they believe Penix is their guy, you take him, no questions asked. We can already hear all of the collective couch GMs groan right now.
Who’s the better fit for the Raiders?
As for Arnold, there’s growing buzz about him as a fit for the Raiders. ESPN’s Jordan Reid recently had the Alabama product heading to the Silver and Black in his recent mock draft. Essentially, Reid believes Arnold is a natural fit for the Antonio Pierce-led squad.
“The cornerback group lacks size and high-end talent, but Arnold checks both of those boxes and gives coach Antonio Pierce a true CB1. Arnold had five interceptions last season, and he has a versatile skill set that would allow him to play anywhere in the Raiders’ secondary.”
Speaking of Pierce, the Raiders coach generated some buzz of his own this week. With regard to Arnold, Pierce was at his pro day, even remarking that he “liked him already.” Obviously, people ran with it. However, it’s definitely something to keep an eye on. The Raiders could always use another defensive playmaker and leader; Arnold fits that mold.
If a trade-up doesn’t materialize for Telesco, Arnold could be a nice consolation prize. Or, is Penix the pick if you’re Telesco?
