Las Vegas Raiders News: Jack Jones

Raiders CB Jack Jones Poised For Breakout Campaign

Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jack Jones looks to have a breakout season if his preseason dominance is of any indication.

Last Saturday, the Raiders played their preseason debut game against the Minnesota Vikings in a tightly contested exhibition. Every player on defense suited up to begin this preseason matchup and left an impression on the opposing rookie quarterback. Jones left an impressive mark, to say the least, posting a 92.3 Pro Football Focus grade in the preseason opener.

Certainly rookie J.J. McCarthy did not mean any harm in his quote, but Jones may have used his words as disrespect. “I am excited to play against a vanilla defense,” McCarthy said. Similarly, many fans found this offensive and considered it disrespectful.

Raiders Notes: J.J. McCarthy struggled against Jack Jones

In their first matchup, Jones exhibited his playmaking ability and showed that his playstyle is not vanilla. He was targeted four times and only allowed two catches for 14 yards. In addition, Jones electrified the game with a pass breakup and an interception.

When Jones was targeted, McCarthy posted an 18.8 QBR, which is terrible as a starting quarterback. It was evident throughout the contest that Jones was the best outside cornerback on the team. Comparatively, younger cornerbacks such as M.J Devonshire and Sam Webb were not very successful. Both of them allowed 158.3 perfect QBRs.

Why Jack Jones Will Blossom

Jones began his career with a slow start on the New England Patriots; he often had to battle to stay on the field. He dealt with legal trouble that eventually would lead to his release from the team. Because he was unable to create plays on the field, Jones was a risky free agent for many teams. Thankfully for the Raiders, head coach Antonio Pierce believed in him and took the chance.

Instantly, his energy and presence on the field became contagious for the defense. It appears that the program’s overall identity grew with his addition. Slowly but surely, he has become a fan favorite with his playmaking ability.

In only seven games with the team, Jones racked up two interceptions and returned them for touchdowns. Additionally, he also recorded four pass deflections and 25 tackles in less than half of a season. The 2024 season will mark Jones’ first run as an “everyday” starter, barring injury or regression.

In addition to his presence on the field, the Raiders’ defensive line will significantly contribute to his success. Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins’ pressure will only make interceptions easier for Jones. This was exemplified against the Vikings as he capitalized on a forced throw under pressure.

With his amazing ball skills and playmaking ability, Jones can easily become a league leader for interceptions. If he stays healthy, it should not come as a surprise to see him in the conversation for a Pro Bowl as well. He has the tools to be a great playmaker, but can he combine them?
