Raiders News: Richie Incognito, Jackson Powers-Johnson

Should Raiders Fans Quell Expectations For Jackson Powers-Johnson?

Las Vegas Raiders rookie Jackson Powers-Johnson will be making his long-awaited debut for the Silver and Black this weekend, but what type of performance should we expect?

Raiders general manager Tom Telesco received widespread praise when he selected Powers-Johnson with the 44th overall selection this year. To establish an identity in the trenches, you need to build around maulers—linemen who will play the physical style of football that head coach Antonio Pierce covets. For all intents and purposes, it appears that the rookie exudes that. Fans have yet to witness that on the actual field until now, but that’s changing heading into Week 3.

Pierce himself confirms that JPJ will play on Sunday, despite missing significant time during offseason activities.

What should Raiders fans expect to see from Jackson Powers-Johnson?

Raider Nation is certainly anxious to see how (and if) JPJ can change the fortunes of the team’s O-line. To put it bluntly, the Raiders have been bullied the first two weeks, especially in the interior—are we placing unrealistic pressure on the rookie with the Carolina Panthers coming to town?

Powers-Johnson spoke on his upcoming debut recently (via Vegas Sports Today), highlighting the well-known fact that he’s got some catching up to do, all excitement aside.

“It’s been a lot of catching up. I’ve had a lot of fun in the process, getting back into it. Just trying to get back into shape.”

When asked about what he expects to contribute, particularly in the run game, JPJ was rather positive in his outlook.

“I feel like I can help in any way, they drafted me for my physicality and my attitude. I’m just going to give it 100% and I’m going to contribute in some way.”

The run game for the Raiders has been largely dismal. While running back Alexander Mattison has found the endzone in the first two contests, the consistent running attack is far from established. Perhaps this rookie can infuse some juice in that department on Sunday.
