Raiders News: Kyren Williams, Rams.

Can The Raiders Slow Down Rams Star RB Kyren Williams?

The Las Vegas Raiders have so far been gashed by opposing running backs; will it be any different for Los Angeles Rams star running back Kyren Williams?

Patrick Graham’s defense has largely been a disappointment this season, at least a few weeks in. Devastating injuries to Malcolm Koonce and Christian Wilkins certainly made matters worse for Graham. Still, there’s been some enjoyable surprises, such as Jakorian Bennett’s development and stellar play from Robert Spillane. One major surprise, though, is the Raiders run defense—it’s currently one of the worst in the league.

Kyren Williams vs. Raiders rushing defense

What do the numbers say? Giving up seven touchdowns on the ground and surrendering more than 140 rushing yards per game on average (140.3) can exacerbate any situation. In case you’re wondering, that gives Las Vegas the 27th-ranked rushing defense. Well, things aren’t getting any easier as the hits continue to come for the Raiders. This week, Graham and his boys will have to be content with Williams—the Rams’ stud has found his stride and is in prime position to keep his momentum going.

With regard to Williams, Graham spoke to the media this week and pointed out what impresses him about No. 23, particularly the fact he’s difficult to bring down.

“He’s a very patient runner. Does a good job of pressing the line of scrimmage. He has the ability to jump cut both right and to the left, and then his ability on contact. And he runs behind his pads but he’s able to shrink his surface area to make it hard to tackle, but just watching him, he’s really impressive. He’s really impressive.”

Well, this could get ugly; there’s no sugarcoating it. According to Pro Football Focus, the Raiders have missed 80 tackles thus far—this form of undisciplined football won’t get you far, hence the team’s record. The question is whether Rams head coach Sean McVay will exploit this.
