Thankfully, the Las Vegas Raiders did not lose another game this past week, courtesy of a much-needed bye. Still, it’s back to reality with another possible loss on the horizon. The fact is, injuries have plagued this roster on all fronts, but there is hope that recent coaching changes will help.
However, it will be a tough task this week as the Raiders will face arguably the fastest team in the league, the Miami Dolphins. Miami, with players like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Devon Achane, are known for turning on their jets at a moment’s notice. Certainly, Hill will be the primary focus of this offense. Last season, he torched the Raiders with 10 catches, 146 yards, and a touchdown.
MinshewMania Is Back
On Wednesday, Antonio Pierce named Gardner Minshew as the starter for this upcoming week. “At some point you got to give a guy confidence,” Pierce said. Despite being a Pro Bowl quarterback in the past, this has by far been Minshew’s worst season. Was it because of the coaching? Hopefully this question is answered on Sunday.
Although Minshew has a high completion percentage, his interceptions are a huge issue. He has not played in more than three games entirely yet has eight interceptions. Additionally, he has five fumbles to add to his turnover catalog. It will be crucial to see if he can turn those interceptions into touchdowns this week.
Michael Mayer’s Return To The Raiders
Mayer has not played a snap since Week 3 of the season—he was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list for a personal matter that has not been disclosed (nor should it). If you recall, his sudden absence sparked conspiracy theories and trade rumors on social media at one point. However, we have now put that to rest.
Pierce’s philosophy as a head coach was to have 12 personnel, including two tight ends. However, a variety of factors have prevented the team from seeing much of that. With Davante Adams out of the picture, Mayer should play a bigger role than he did in the past; it will be interesting to see how he fits back into the offense under Scott Turner’s direction.
Maxx Crosby’s Health
2024 was supposed to be the season where Crosby earned his stripes. By stripes, we’re referring to a Defensive Player of the Year award. Raiders fans expected this season to be a testament to his greatness. Sadly, it has not been that, as he was ruled out for the first time in his career. His injuries have prevented him from having a dominant campaign. Despite consistently facing double and triple teams, Raider Nation maintains high expectations.
With more time to rest and hopefully an inspired group, there should be a new product on Sunday. Crosby had a sack on Tua Tagovailoa in their last matchup. Time will tell if he is able to accomplish this feat again.
