Timeline of the Raiders’ Super Bowl Trophies: Honoring NFL Greatness

Raiders’ Three Championship Seasons

Remembering Championship Years of the Silver and Black

The Raiders’ Super Bowl wins per year were in the 1976, 1980, and 1983 NFL seasons.  What is intriguing about the Raiders’ championship history is that none of the games were close. They defeated the Vikings 32-14 on Jan. 9, 1977, the Eagles 27-10 on Jan. 25, 1981, and Washington 38-9 on Jan. 22, 1984.

The Raiders’ multiple Super Bowl titles saw them score a total of 12 touchdowns. They reinforced owner Al Davis’ mantra of Just Win, Baby in each of the victories.

Vanquishing the Vikings

The first Super Bowl won by the Raiders was when the team was based in Oakland. Yes, the Silver and Black have moved around during their existence, but they are most associated with the Bay Area.

In Super Bowl XI, played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, the Raiders were led to victory by a powerful offense that produced a then-game record 459 yards and didn’t have a turnover.

Ken Stabler threw for 180 yards and a touchdown. Running back Clarence Davis had 137 rushing yards. Another RB, Pete Banaszak, only carried the ball 10 times for 19 yards, but two of those rushes went for touchdowns.

Perhaps the most memorable highlight happened in the fourth quarter with Oakland up 26-7. Hall of Fame defensive back Willie Brown intercepted a pass and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. The return has been replayed over and over with the camera shot dead-on, facing Brown as he headed to paydirt.

Clipping the Eagles

Super Bowl XV saw the Raiders—still in Oakland—play the Philadelphia Eagles. Oakland became the first wild-card team to win a Super Bowl. The Raiders were 11-5 under Tom Flores in the regular season.

They defeated the Houston Oilers, Cleveland Browns, and San Diego Chargers to earn a spot in the Super Bowl against the Eagles. Jim Plunkett threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns in the romp.

The Raiders raced to a 24-3 lead in the third quarter and coasted home to a 27-10 victory. Kenny King caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from Plunkett, while speedster Cliff Branch had two TD receptions.

On defense, linebacker Rod Martin had five tackles. He is better known, however, for the three interceptions he made. He returned the picks for 44 yards, with a long return of 25.

Martin’s three interceptions continue to be a record for one Super Bowl game.

The Marcus Allen Show

In the 1983 season, the Raiders went 12-4 and then crushed the Steelers and Seahawks by a combined 68-24 in playoff games.

That set up a Super Bowl against Washington. In XVIII, the Los Angeles Raiders put on a show, rolling to a 38-9 victory.

Allen carried the ball 20 times for 191 yards on the ground. In the third quarter, he scored on a five-yard run and followed that with a 74-yard score that is on virtually every Super Bowl highlight reel.

Los Angeles’ defense rattled Washington QB Joe Theismann to the tune of six sacks for 50 yards in losses and forced three turnovers. The Silver and Black scored the game’s final 17 points in winning their third Super Bowl to complete the Raiders’ championship history to date.

How Many Super Bowl Trophies Do the Raiders Have?

The Raiders, as mentioned above, have three Vince Lombardi trophies. While the Raiders have multiple Super Bowl titles, there are still several NFL teams who never won a Super Bowl and continue their quest for a championship.

Who has Won More Super Bowls, the Chiefs or the Raiders?

The teams are hated rivals. Their two meetings each season are bound to deliver tense moments where emotions spill over. That’s what happens when you put the Raiders and Chiefs together in AFC West games. Overall, they have each had success in Super Bowls. The Raiders have won three times in their five appearances. The Chiefs have four Super Bowl victories to their credit in seven appearances. The other teams in the division are the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers. The Broncos have won the Vince Lombardi Trophy three times, while the Bolts are looking for their first Super Bowl win.
