Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty

All Eyes On Ashton Jeanty—Will He Deliver Amidst Heavy Expectations?

To say there are lofty expectations for Ashton Jeanty is an understatement. The Heisman Trophy runner-up and sixth overall pick in last month’s NFL draft will be looked upon to carry the Las Vegas Raiders offense.

The Raiders rookie minicamp showcased some of Jeanty’s potential. Raider Nation consumed his movement, speed, and other attributes through viral social media posts. Still, he’s still a ways off from being able to do it on the field against opponents. Hopefully it was just a sample of what’s to come.

Running backs have gone through somewhat of a devaluation the last couple of years. So when Jeanty was made the pick, there were concerns; he’s the first at his position to be drafted that high since Saquon Barkley. With his $35.9 million dollar deal signed, it’s time to put in the work.

Jeanty dropped some tidbits during the practices, reiterating his excitement for what’s to come.

“So to finally be out here, get to work with the team, it’s just exciting.”

How does Ashton Jeanty fit the Pete Carroll-led Raiders?

When individuals reflect on Carroll’s tenure as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, one prominent figure is Marshawn Lynch. Yes, the defense was largely the catalyst for Carroll’s success but it was Lynch who kept the engine going. The 5′ 11″ and 210-plus pound beast of a player dominated the field—he was often impossible to bring down. Jeanty, who has a similar frame, is also known for his ability to break tackles. In case you didn’t know, Jeanty rushed for nearly 2,000 yards after contact—that’s who the Raiders just drafted.

It’s not difficult to see why an organization led by Carroll saw the value of what Jeanty might bring. Besides, in a draft class devoid of a true generational quarterback prospect, it made sense to go with Jeanty. Now, in back-to-back years, the Raiders walked away from the draft with the best offensive player available. Some will say that the team could’ve drafted a running back later in the draft; the dropoff in talent after Jeanty is steep.

While Raiders fans might not want to recall last season, it should be reemphasized that the team averaged less than 80 rushing yards per game (79.8). That was the worst in the league; it can only get better from here with Jeanty.
