Pete Carroll hires Chip Kelly offensive coordinator of Las Vegas Raiders

New Las Vegas Raiders OC Chip Kelly Elevating The Team’s Enthusiasm

A surprising but positive development has been the enthusiasm that’s been injected into the Las Vegas Raiders in the early going of offseason activities. That’s largely thanks to their new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.

First off, Kelly emulating the legendary Al Davis was not on my bingo card. When asked this week in his presser what his vision was for this offense, Kelly dropped the phrase made so famous by Davis generations ago, “Just Win, Baby.” That’s quite the vision and if it comes to fruition, look out. Even if you didn’t agree with the hiring of Kelly, or maybe it just didn’t move the needle for you, the offensive coordinator is already making his presence known.

The vibe just feels different this season. While Raider Nation has likely heard this song many times before, no one can deny that something’s different. To quote the Scorpions, “The future’s in the air; I can feel it everywhere, blowing with the wind of change.” As Raiders punter AJ Cole alluded to this week, he emphasized that it’s been a long time since he’s looked forward to work. You then have Geno Smith, the team’s new starting quarterback, who was also getting in on the positivity.

“In many ways, it’s a dream come true because I’ve always revered Coach Kelly.”

Raiders fans, this Chip Kelly guy is different…

All of the buzz just isn’t camp fodder or conjecture. Kelly himself said that “you always adapt to your personnel” while addressing the media after practice. That alone should be music to everyone’s ears. When is the last time a Raiders coach actually meant that? Most of the coaches this century for the Raiders have tried to fit the player into their scheme. It’s never the other way around. So, whether you’re a player on this team or a fan that’s suffered through a litany of “offensive gurus,” rejoice!

While we have yet to traverse through training camp, Kelly is saying all the right things. The real question will come down to execution on game day. Nonetheless, it does appear that the former UCLA head coach is looking to maximize the talent already available to him.

Just look at the difference in how Kelly is taking a liking to tight end Michael Mayer. The former Notre Dame star received his share of praise from his new play caller this week.

“I think Mike has been outstanding since I’ve been here, really excited about him.”

Do you remember all of the excitement from when the Raiders selected Brock Bowers and the possibility of pairing him with Mayer? Last season, that didn’t exactly materialize. Though that was for a few different reasons, as far as Kelly goes, he acknowledged that there’s no limit to how many tight ends you can use in a game, whether it’s two or three. All of this to say that the camp buzz and energy do appear to have a “night and day” difference. A nice upgrade from, say, Luke Getsy?
