Legendary running backs have made their mark in the AFC West, and the list continues to grow. Players like Bo Jackson, Jamaal Charles, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Terrell Davis are well-known names. Last season, the standout in the division was J.K. Dobbins, who amassed 905 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in 13 games.
When fans think of this division, they often focus on the exceptional quarterback play. Many teams in the AFC West prefer to emphasize their passing game. In 2024, the Las Vegas Raiders posted the lowest average of rushing yards per game at 79.1. While the passing game is top-notch, there are several new players who could shift this narrative.
No. 4: RJ Harvey, Denver Broncos
After the departure of Javonte Williams, the Denver Broncos needed to bolster their running back depth. They selected Harvey in the second round, 60th overall. Despite being a second-round pick, draft analysts do not consider the Central Florida alum to be a starter. His prospect grade of 5.96 projects him as an average backup or a special teams player.
Harvey holds the record for the most touchdowns scored at UCF, with 48 touchdowns—an impressive feat. On a positive note, the 24-year-old has the potential to develop into a higher-level player. The Broncos tend to utilize multiple running backs throughout the season, which will help reduce wear and tear on his body.
No. 3: Isiah Pacheco/Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs
The two-headed monster in Kansas City presents two different running styles: Pacheco, with his keen and unique form, and Hunt, known for his burly, bruising approach. Last year’s Super Bowl champions faced challenges in their run game last season. Moreover, the overall offense struggled throughout the previous campaign.
Although Pacheco was injured for much of the year, he managed to contribute during the playoffs, albeit with minimal impact—totaling just 37 rushing yards in three games. In contrast, Hunt accumulated 117 rushing yards during the playoffs. The competition for the starting job with the Chiefs will be intense this offseason.

No. 2: Najee Harris/Omarion Hampton, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles has completely transformed its running game this offseason thanks to moves made by general manager Joe Hortiz. After attempting to replicate the Baltimore Ravens’ formula, the team’s scheme has changed. Before drafting Hampton in the first round, the Chargers signed Najee Harris to a one-year, $5.2 million deal.
Hampton’s prospect grade of 6.35 surpasses RJ Harvey’s, suggesting his potential as a quality starter. Harris, a consistently dominant force in the run game, has recorded 1,000 rushing yards every season of his career as a former Pittsburgh Steeler.
No. 1: Ashton Jeanty, Las Vegas Raiders
Before he has taken a snap in the NFL, Jeanty is undoubtedly the best at his position in the AFC West. In addition to being the highest-drafted running back, he finds himself in an optimal situation. Other teams will likely rely on multiple running backs to strengthen their rushing attacks.
Although Sin City signed Raheem Mostert to a one-year, $1.6 million deal, Jeanty will be the primary focus. The Boise State alumnus was the Heisman runner-up in his final college season. Overall, as the sixth overall pick, he is a workhorse in the backfield. If he lives up to the hype, Jeanty is expected to receive a significant portion of the carries in Las Vegas.
