It’s AFC West or bust–at least, that’s how it went down for first-year Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram, who juggled talks with both his current team and the Los Angeles Chargers.
Evan Engram wasn’t a free agent for long after getting cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the first week of March. In just under one full week, the two-time Pro Bowl tight end went from being a member of the Jaguars organization to playing in Sean Payton‘s offense at Mile High.
Denver was, after all, the first team to contact Engram after his release.
But it wasn’t only the Broncos that Engram spoke with during his short-lived free agency. In fact, Denver wasn’t the only team to host Engram on a visit. Behind closed doors, the Los Angeles Chargers were making their best attempt at luring the eight-year veteran to their side of the AFC West.
“[I] took a visit to L.A., great organization there as well, had a great visit with them,” Engram noted in a press conference late last week.
But as the old proverb goes, the early bird gets the worm. Fortunately for the Broncos, they were early on Engram and his situation.
“The best place for me, and my family, was here in Denver,” Engram explained. “Just with the offense, the history here, the way the organization takes care of its players.”
Two seasons ago, during his ’23 campaign, Engram hauled in 114 passes throughout the year. That stands as the second-most for a tight end in league history.
Perhaps Engram would be looking to bounce back from his 114-catch campaign in Los Angeles had the Chargers been first to call. In the meantime, all eyes are on the Mississippi alum as he gets ready for Year 1 in Denver.
