On Tuesday, the Las Vegas Raiders began their first day of mandatory minicamp. It marks the first time that the team in its entirety practiced together at full attendance. Pete Carroll, along with the rest of the new regime, officially begins their process of “Commitment to Excellence.”
Let’s recap with some Raiders notes and highlights from Day 1.
Kolton Miller Wants to Wear Silver and Black Forever
The biggest story of this offseason has been Kolton Miller’s contract. Despite him being a cornerstone of this offense since 2018, the stellar tackle has no guaranteed money on his deal. Additionally, after this season, Miller will be an unrestricted free agent. In that case, many would look for drama to ensue as the UCLA alum no longer had stability.
The Raiders’ left tackle expressed a strong desire to remain with the team, emphasizing that he has no intention of leaving.
“I want to be a Raider,” Miller said. “I want to be a Raider for life.”
Still No Sign of Christian Wilkins: Defensive Line Still Thriving
Maxx Crosby is undoubtedly the standout player of the defensive line. We anticipate Christian Wilkins, a 2024 free agent signing, to be his partner alongside him. Notably, the defensive tackle was the only player on the roster who did not participate this week so far. If No. 94 is able to return, the potential of this pass rush unit could be formidable.
Crosby, along with Tyree Wilson and Malcom Koonce, is healthy for training camp. If Wilson can combine all his skills and everyone else maintains their health, the possibilities are boundless.
Raiders CB Jakorian Bennett Has Healed from His Shoulder Injuries
“I haven’t had both of my shoulders since college,” Bennett said. “My shoulder popped out five times last season during games.”
The University of Maryland alum was the best cornerback on the team last season. As of now, Bennett has started in only 11 games in his career. However, we expect things to change in 2025, as Sin City will rely on him to play significant snaps. That said, Darien Porter is poised to challenge him for playing time. Bennett shared his thoughts on the rookie from Iowa State.
“He is going to be a good player,” Bennett said. “Lanky, fast, he’s going to be good for us.”
Even though Porter clocked a remarkable 4.30 in the 40-yard dash, Bennett still considers himself the fastest cornerback on the team.
Offense is Much Improved this Season
Last season, the Raiders’ offense scored 18.2 points per game. This needs to be dramatically improved and fixed. Following these struggles, there was a transformation in the identity and scheme of this offense. Now with Chip Kelly at the helm, the team reportedly is looking a lot better.
Additionally, Dont’e Thornton Jr. continues to impress this offseason. There is a chance that he can compete to be the second-best wide receiver on this roster.
