With rookies reporting this week, now is an opportune moment to discuss some ongoing concerns regarding the Las Vegas Raiders. In particular, two specific issues stand out.
On Thursday, the Raiders finally began the long-awaited training camp practices. Initially, only the rookies attended this session, which will continue until July 22nd. At that point, the veterans will join the team, and practice will be in full swing. Expectations are low for incoming head coach Pete Carroll. The team is coming off a disastrous 2024 season—they just need to get some wins under their belt before talk of championship aspirations.
Anyway, what are some concerns worth noting?
Should the Raiders extend Kolton Miller and Jakobi Meyers?
What will Sin City do with their cornerstone players at left tackle and wide receiver? In 2026, these two crucial players on this roster will become free agents. Both veterans, in need of new contracts, have shown resilience throughout the process. Let’s face it, Kolton Miller has been an absolute asset to the team. Jakobi Meyers, who has been the team’s de facto No. 1 wideout since his arrival, could also make a compelling case.
FYI, Las Vegas still has $31 million of open cap space.
Miller will be 31 at the end of the season. For this reason, his new contract may not have many years on it. Similarly, Meyers will be 30 at the end of this season. It’s understandable to want to have younger players next year, but these two players are absolutely essential to this roster. The youth movement is underway in Las Vegas, but you also need reliable, steady veterans to round things out. Despite the team’s shortcomings, Miller and Meyers, if nothing else, have been dependable.
Is the Las Vegas secondary serviceable or do they need another veteran?
Despite the signing of Eric Stokes and Jeremy Chinn, there are not many proven players in this secondary. Rookie Darien Porter will receive a chance to compete for a starting role as well. Still, that’s a lot to ask of your young newcomer. The nickel cornerback position remains uncertain. Additionally, none of the safeties are true middle-field players (something to keep note of).

Newly acquired quarterback Geno Smith will work daily to analyze the defense as training camp progresses. If the secondary can successfully challenge the Pro Bowl signal-caller, it will be a positive sign. However, if the secondary struggles to create turnovers and disrupt passes, the team may consider signing an additional defensive back.
Given the current situation, it’s likely that a free agent signing may occur soon, as players such as Justin Simmons and Mike Hilton remain available. Training camp will provide clarity on these matters in the near future.
