AFC West: Ranking RBs

Division of Difference-Makers: AFC West X-Factors Revealed

Let’s examine the key X-factor for each team in the AFC West this season, especially now that training camps are underway for all teams.

Sadly, for the Las Vegas Raiders, they play in arguably the toughest division in the NFL. The AFC West features the best head coaches in the league, and every team arguably has a franchise quarterback. However, this season is the first time in a long time that the Raiders have had a real chance to compete.

After finishing last place in the AFC West in 2024, the Silver and Black hired a new head coach to lead this roster. Equally important, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has a storied rivalry with Pete Carroll. The two battled in the NFC West previously. It will be fascinating to see how this rivalry plays out. The Kansas City Chiefs are consistently Super Bowl participants, and the Denver Broncos are an emerging competitor.

Denver Broncos X-Factor: The Lethal Pass Rush

The Mile High City creates difficult air to breathe, which reflects what opposing quarterbacks feel. No squad came close to the sack numbers of the Broncos. 2024 saw the team lead the entire NFL with 63 sacks at the end of the season.

Nik Bonitto is the star of this defensive line. He had a breakout season, finishing with 13.5 sacks and adding a Pro Bowl nod to his resume. Despite finishing with 10.5 sacks last season, Jonathon Cooper did not receive a Pro Bowl honor.

It cannot be forgotten that the reigning Defensive Player of the Year can possibly improve next season. Patrick Surtain II will be 25 years old next season and has many years ahead of him.

Los Angeles Chargers X-Factor: The Turnover Kings

Justin Herbert leads this offense in a special way. He led the league with the lowest interception percentage. At the same time, the Oregon alum throws for at least 20 touchdowns every season. His limited interceptions help the defense avoid challenging situations.

The Chargers defense excels at creating turnovers. Key defensive players, such as Derwin James Jr. and Tarheeb Still, consistently create turnovers. Additionally, Ladd McConkey had an impressive rookie season and will attract significant attention from opposing teams.

Kansas City Chiefs X-Factor: Patrick Mahomes’ Magic Act

The Magician plays the quarterback position in a way that is unprecedented. His unique arm angles and unconventional throws render him virtually unstoppable. It’s no surprise that he has already won the Super Bowl three times.

Another key element is Mahomes’ favorite target, Travis Kelce. Together, they consistently outsmart their opponents. Furthermore, the Chiefs have equipped Mahomes with several dynamic gadget players, such as Xavier Worthy, who excel with the ball in their hands.

Like former Raiders cornerback Jack Jones said, “You stop the magician, then the act is over.”

Las Vegas Raiders: “The Condor” and The Silent Killer

Before last season, Maxx Crosby was the focal point for every team’s scouting report on the Raiders. However, things have changed. Now the team has one of the best tight end prospects of all time on their roster. Being that he was a first-team All-Pro last season, he will now be another focal point on scouting reports.

On defense Crosby commands double teams and sometimes even a third blocker. His shiftiness and quick hands cause havoc with his pass rush abilities. He is also the vocal leader for the Silver and Black.

Different from “The Condor,” Brock Bowers leads by example. Despite his lack of vocalization, Brock Bowers, a Georgia alum, demonstrates his leadership through his actions. His sturdy hands and ability to win his matchups are uncanny. He will be a dangerous weapon for a long time.
