No, it’s not a matchup between Geno Smith and Aidan O’Connell, but Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll was inquired about another possible competition in training camp that involves No. 12.
As the Raiders settle into training camp, the quarterback spotlight is heating up—and Carroll isn’t shy about what he’s seeing from his signal-callers.
Is there a QB battle brewing for the Las Vegas Raiders?
When asked about the developing competition between second-year signal-caller Aidan O’Connell and rookie Cam Miller, Carroll gave a measured but telling response. “We’ve got a good chance to see Aidan,” Carroll stated. “He’s impressed our coaches—his learning ability, his understanding of the game, and his poise in handling situations.”
According to Carroll, the Raiders dialed up the pressure this offseason to test their quarterbacks, and O’Connell delivered. From situational drills to mental reps, he’s proving he’s not the same rookie who walked in last year. There’s polish, poise, and a growing command of the offense that has coaches excited. The fact is, we really shouldn’t be surprised. Through that poise and sheer will, AOC has outlived two coaching changes and firmly positioned himself as a reliable piece moving forward.

As for Cam Miller? The raw talent is there, but he’s still in the early stages. “He’s just getting rolling,” Carroll said, indicating the former FCS standout is still finding his footing at the NFL level.
It’s clear that Aidan O’Connell is currently leading the competition for the backup quarterback position, while Miller’s story is just beginning. Expect a camp filled with competitiveness and excitement as Carroll oversees their development. For now, Raider Nation can take comfort knowing their quarterback room has potential. Whether it’s Aidan’s poised leadership or Cam’s potential, the future at the position appears more promising than it did a year ago.
