Maxx Effort: No. 98 Sets the Tone in Raiders Camp, Pete Carroll Raves

With training camp in full swing, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll recently praised Maxx Crosby for setting the tone—he’s the standard.

If there’s one player setting the standard at Raiders training camp, it’s Crosby—and Carroll is relishing every moment. The former Seattle Seahawks head coach has experience with Super Bowl-winning defenses; he knows how to recognize someone special.

Maxx Crosby, Pete Carroll: the duo that the Raiders needed…

The veteran coach, known for grooming legendary players at all levels and battling elite talent, didn’t hold back when asked about Crosby’s relentless presence. “He truly is the epitome of what we’re looking for in this program,” Carroll stated. “And he doesn’t just speak it—he does it.”

Every snap, every drill, Crosby attacks like it’s the Super Bowl. Whether it’s bursting off the edge with a wicked speed rush or knifing inside with an up-and-under move, the perennial Pro Bowler is keeping the offense on high alert. Carroll even joked that quarterback Geno Smith is learning to stay ready: “Every time he rushes, you have to be aware—you may have to duck!”

Young tackle DJ Glaze, who lines up against Crosby every day, is undergoing a rigorous trial. “He’s giving DJ all he wants,” Carroll added, calling it a golden opportunity for the rookie to grow. Carroll’s right, folks. Iron sharpens iron and the much-heralded rookie is learning from the best every day—sooner or later, that’s going to pay off when it matters.

But it’s not just pass rushing. Crosby’s relentless effort during pursuit drills, coupled with his contagious energy, sets the tone for the entire defense. “His consistent intensity is really ideal for what we’re looking for,” Carroll said.

Crosby isn’t merely a star; he embodies the heartbeat of the Raiders.
