The Las Vegas Raiders have had quite the eventful start to their training camp this year. From shocking releases to former players finding new homes—we’ve got you covered. Oh, and is a former first-round pick on the verge of a breakout year under head coach Pete Carroll?
Former Raiders star player finds another home…
Cornerback Jack Jones is trading the “Silver and Black” for aqua and orange. The free-agent defender, who started 16 games for the Raiders last season, is signing a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, according to league insider Adam Schefter. Jones brings starting experience and swagger to a Dolphins secondary that’s looking to reload after an injury-riddled 2024 season.
Jones is returning to a familiar environment, having previously played for the New England Patriots during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The 26-year-old is recognized for his aggressive coverage and ability to make impactful plays. Now, he aims to make a significant impact in the AFC East while playing from South Beach.
For Miami, the acquisition is a low-risk, high-reward signing that showcases potential. For Jones, it presents an opportunity to demonstrate that he is more than just a one-season wonder. Dolphins fans should get ready for some exciting plays in the secondary.
Speaking of potentially exciting plays…
Pete Carroll Says It’s Tyree Time: Raiders Expect a Breakout Year from Wilson
Raiders head coach Pete Carroll isn’t holding back when it comes to third-year edge rusher Tyree Wilson. After two seasons of flashes and growing pains—including some early injury setbacks—Carroll believes 2025 is the year Wilson turns potential into production.
“I think this is really his time,” Carroll said when addressing the media about Wilson’s development. “I’m counting on him to do stuff in a big way.”
The Raiders are shifting Wilson, known for his impressive length and exceptional athleticism, around the defensive front. While Wilson primarily enjoys playing on the edge, the Raiders are experimenting with him in interior roles to create mismatches and boost his overall impact.
What has Carroll most excited isn’t just Wilson’s physical tools but his motor: “His effort and his concern about doing things really hard and full speed—that’s a really good sign.”
With Maxx Crosby already commanding attention and the loss of Christian Wilkins up front, Wilson could be the X-factor that ties the Raiders’ pass rush together. If Carroll’s instincts are right, Wilson might not just be a breakout candidate—he could be a breakout star.
The Raiders defense is in an intriguing position. Many of last year’s starters, like Jones and Wilkins, are no longer with the team. However, with Carroll supervising Patrick Graham’s unit, players such as Wilson may finally reach their potential.
