The Las Vegas Raiders’ backup quarterback situation is suddenly looking far less settled than it did just a week ago.
For most of camp, Aidan O’Connell had the No. 2 role firmly in his grasp. In practice, he’s been decisive, accurate, and in command. But under the lights against the Seattle Seahawks’ reserves, that version of O’Connell didn’t show up—at least not in the first half. He held the ball too long, looked slow to process, and was far too loose with his decision-making.
While his third-quarter improvement was notable, the lasting impression was that his poise in practice hasn’t consistently translated to game speed. Even O’Connell admitted, “I can’t turn the ball over, and I have to stay ahead of the sticks.”
Who will be the Raiders’ backup quarterback?
Enter Cam Miller. Despite only having three series, the rookie made them meaningful. Cam Miller delivered a 41-yard strike to Shedrick Jackson, orchestrated a game-tying drive, and nearly secured a game-winner—only to have it thwarted by a blocked kick. Despite facing Seattle’s third string, these moments garnered attention. Certainly, some may attempt to downplay this achievement, but it remains impressive regardless. For a draft pick that didn’t initially spark much enthusiasm among Raider Nation, Miller is rapidly gaining support.
Looking back, Miller demonstrated impressive touch, athleticism, and a confidence that belied his limited playing time. Raiders minority owner Tom Brady reportedly endorsed him during the draft process, and Miller has been quietly making an impression since OTAs.
The current dynamic is intriguing. O’Connell is still the clear favorite on the depth chart—for now—but Miller is gaining momentum and possesses a skill set that could prompt the Raiders to reassess how they allocate practice reps. With Geno Smith firmly established as the starting quarterback, there’s no immediate pressure to accelerate Miller’s development. However, each impressive play he makes increases the likelihood that the team will want to see more of him.
Miller’s emergence has transformed what initially appeared to be a settled situation into a legitimate competition for the backup quarterback position. Should O’Connell falter again, the opportunity may arise for the rookie to step in.
