It may be time to engage in a candid discussion regarding the linebacker group for the Las Vegas Raiders. Should we be concerned?
The Raiders’ linebackers have quickly become one of the most talked-about position groups this preseason. In fact, head coach Pete Carroll made it clear after the team’s latest outing that he’s encouraged by what he sees.
While addressing the media this week, Carroll praised the unit’s physicality. He went on to say the group was “downhill, really aggressive, and flashy” while helping to set the tone against the run. Carroll’s comments are significant if we’re honest. As he observes the Raiders defense, he surely recognizes the inability to control the line of scrimmage. The team has struggled with this issue for years. Conversely, he’s starting to embrace the inherent strengths of the linebacker corps.
Is Tommy Eichenberg the weak spot on the Raiders’ defense?
However, despite the positive evaluation of the unit as a whole, observers continue to closely monitor second-year linebacker Tommy Eichenberg. The former Ohio State standout was drafted for his toughness and instinctive play. Regrettably, his transition to the NFL hasn’t been smooth.
RaiderNation do you think Tommy Eichenberg could be an odd man out candidate?

Analysts noted Eichenberg’s struggles on one particular drive, where he bit on run fakes, lost his gap discipline, and was even run over on a key play. As Jesse Merrick of the Silver & Black Sports Network pointed out, that film will be tough for Eichenberg to rewatch.
Still, Eichenberg experienced some positive developments. He flashed his potential with a strong open-field tackle earlier in the game. This moment served as a reminder to everyone why the Raiders had faith in his potential to develop into a reliable contributor. Like many young players, consistency will be the hurdle. That said, Carroll’s scheme will test whether Eichenberg can adapt quickly enough to avoid being labeled the “odd man out” in a crowded linebacker room.
The encouraging sign for Raider Nation is that Carroll sees progress. His vision is clear: an aggressive defense that attacks downhill, tackles with authority, and complements the team’s offensive tempo. Eichenberg can keep his job if he can correct his mental mistakes and build on his successes. As Carroll helps the Raiders’ linebackers establish their identity, he remains a crucial subplot.
