Welp, that sucked. There’s no other way to put it. The Las Vegas Raiders got taken to the cleaners by a team quarterbacked by Marcus Mariota. Let’s react.
The Raiders are not a playoff team…
For the second week in a row, Las Vegas played a wild card team from last season and was beaten convincingly. While both the Chargers and Commanders are improved this year, neither is considered to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender. It is just impossible to watch the Raiders right now and envision them in the postseason.
The offensive line has been performing poorly, the defense is mediocre at best, and they continue to allow significant plays on special teams. Increasingly, this season appears to be one of rebuilding. It is time to start considering the long-term future…
Time to take offers on Jakobi Meyers…
Back in August, it made sense to hang on to Meyers, even if there was a chance he would be gone this coming offseason. At that time, Las Vegas still had legitimate postseason hopes. Now, those hopes fade more and more each week. At the same time, there becomes less and less of a reason to keep the veteran receiver.
After failing to get an extension done in the offseason, Meyers will likely be gone after this year. He will likely want to go to a contender and the Raiders seemingly spent a second-round pick on his replacement in Jack Bech. Las Vegas should trade Meyers before the deadline since they don’t seem ready for the playoffs.
Staying on the offensive side of the ball…
It’s time to make moves on the offensive line…
This group sure puts the “offensive” in offensive line. That was just plain horrendous. Jackson Powers-Johnson’s absence may have contributed, but Alex Cappa, his replacement, wasn’t the only issue up front. None of the offensive linemen looked very good.
Perhaps you can attribute some of the issues to the scheme or the coaching staff, but there were too many players who were easily outmatched one-on-one. An over-the-hill Von Miller easily outmatched DJ Glaze, while Jordan Meredith struggled to block anyone. Things cannot get much worse, so Las Vegas might as well shake things up. One option would be to consider rookies Charles Grant and Caleb Rogers. If the team does not feel they are ready, it could be time to look at free agency or even a potential trade.
