Cornerback play has been mostly a disappointment for the Las Vegas Raiders; it makes you wonder if they should’ve kept Jack Jones.
Jones didn’t have much of an impact a couple of years into his NFL career. However, things started to trend upward after he made his way onto the Raiders in 2023. Under former head coach Antonio Pierce, Jones began flashing glimpses of potential. His stellar efforts in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs will live forever in the Silver and Black’s lore, thanks in part to a legendary photo of him intercepting Patrick Mahomes.
A great snapshot aside, Jones failed to live up to much loftier expectations in 2024. What’s funny is that he actually recorded 16 pass deflections that season, but the incoming regime led by Pete Carroll clearly wasn’t high on him.
Should the Las Vegas Raiders have kept Jack Jones?
For his part, Jones eventually ended up in sunny Miami playing for the Dolphins. As far as Raiders fans have been concerned, he’s been relegated to a list of players that simply didn’t deliver on the hype. Nonetheless, Jones has managed to carve a nice role as he’s started 11 games for the Dolphins this season. In a twist of fate, Jones actually caught an interception in overtime this weekend, which helped set his team up for a game-winning field goal.
Ever the vocal player and one who probably spends more time on social media than he should, Jones took the opportunity to point out that his old team probably should’ve never moved on from him. In hindsight, the job done by general manager John Spytek with regard to the cornerback position is a cause for debate among many in Raider Nation. Still, you can’t argue that Jones’ immaturity and questionable work ethic likely led to his demise.
The Raiders need a cornerback and didn’t do enough to address the position this past offseason. Jones is immature and will disappear at times on the field. All of these things can be true at once. But they actually miss Jones?
