Raiders News: Fernando Mendoza, and more.

Predicting when Fernando Mendoza will make his Raiders debut is anyone’s guess

While Las Vegas Raiders fans might already be waiting anxiously for rookie sensation Fernando Mendoza’s first start at quarterback, when that’ll happen is anyone’s guess.

Heading into the 2026 season, the Raiders are in a peculiar position with regard to the quarterback room. Veteran Kirk Cousins was brought in this offseason to help stabilize the position with a proven and successful run. You also have Aidan O’Connell who’s become the stalwart of the bunch through it all. You then have Mendoza, the heir apparent and franchise savior, according to many within Raider Nation.

When should the Raiders start Fernando Mendoza?

What all of that means for actual wins is yet to be determined. While offseason activities are underway, training camp is yet to take place so any “predictions” at this time are to be taken with a grain of salt.

Still, you’d be remised if you didn’t listen to the noise surrounding Mendoza. Cousins himself has already publicly stated he believes the No. 1 overall pick could instantly help the team. The question is, when will he start?

Mendoza was college football’s best quarterback from a statistical standpoint. Despite leading Indiana to the promised land, the NFL is another beast entirely. Hence, that’s why you bring in Cousins to bridge that gap while still putting up the façade that the Raiders will be competitive.

If you recall, Derek Carr once had such a dominant preseason as a rookie that the coaching staff had no choice but to start him from the outset.

If that were to happen with Mendoza, Week 1 wouldn’t be such a bad place to kick things off. The Miami Dolphins, for all intents and purposes, are in rebuilding mode themselves. A new general manager, head coach, starting quarterback, and no more Tyreek Hill. If the Raiders’ defense is as improved as some claim, combined with an explosive rookie signal-caller in this scenario, maybe the opening week would work.
