The Las Vegas Raiders need help at nose tackle, but does a trade for Vita Vea align with John Spytek’s vision or reflect an old-school Al Davis gamble?
Vea to Las Vegas sounds exciting on paper but in practice, it’s a move the Raiders should avoid.
Start with the obvious: Vea is 31. He’s still elite against the run, but defensive tackles at that age are on the back nine of their careers, not the front. Any team that trades for him isn’t just absorbing his $18 million salary this year. It’s also signing up to pay a lucrative extension for a player already past his prime. That’s a steep price for a rebuilding team to pay.
Is Vita Vea worth it for the Raiders?
And make no mistake, the Raiders are rebuilding. Spytek, entering Year 2 as general manager, has spent the offseason reshaping the roster, and most of the trade buzz around Las Vegas has involved players heading out, not stars coming in. That’s the blueprint for a team building toward the future, not chasing wins right now.
Compare that to the other teams reportedly on Vea’s list. The Chargers, Rams and 49ers are all in win-now mode with rosters built to compete immediately. Adding a proven veteran like Vea makes sense for them. It doesn’t for a franchise still figuring out its long-term core.
There’s also the cost of acquisition to consider. Trading for Vea likely means giving up draft capital, the very currency a rebuilding team needs most. Every pick spent on a 31-year-old rental is a pick not spent on building around a young core that fits the Raiders’ actual timeline.

None of this means nose tackle isn’t a real need. It is. But the answer to a roster hole shouldn’t be mortgaging future assets for a short-term fix. The smarter play is developing or drafting a long-term answer at the position, not overpaying for a rental year from a player entering his final season under contract.
Vea is a terrific player. He’s just not the right move for where the Raiders are right now. Las Vegas should watch this situation play out from the sidelines.
